Thai Lakorn: A Return to Childhood

I love watching Thai lakorns. For me, it’s a return to childhood where I don’t have to worry about anything..zip. For those who never heard of Thai lakorn, it is basically Thailand’s soap opera. The story line can range from modern day love story to back in the war time in traditional costume. Stories about kings and queens, pirates, sword fighting, ancient tombs are all what I grew up watching, fantasizing. Hey reality can be so mundane sometimes, so imagination is the way to go!

I watched these Thai lakorn dubbed in Khmer (a Cambodian dialect). Another reason I love to watch these drama series is that my favorite actress and actor grew up with me. It’s not like reading the Archie comic book where the characters stay young forever. They were in high school when I was in elementary school. And they are still in high school even after I graduated from college! I’ll be 65 years old and they would still be going to Riverdale High School!

Tao never understands why I would watch and re-watched some of my favorite lakorns. I think it’s because I know what the ending is like. If I really like the ending, I would watch it over and over again because the ending makes me feel happy. My top five favorite lakorn are:

1. Pai Lod Gor; Starring Anne Thongprasom and Bpob Ponrath. As much research as I did, I can never find this lakorn on sell on the Internet.
2. Roy Sneah Roy Labech; Starring Tik & Aom
3. Dao Pra Sook; Starring Kob & Num
4. DaoTam Din; Starring Kob & Got Jakapan
5. Som Tngai Kom Lich; Starring Kathaleeya & Tang

Generally I like all Thai dramas, but I recently finished one that I advised against watching: BPOM RUK ROY ADEED. Unless you are into catfights and feeling frustrated at how a good storyline goes down the drain due to stupid writers, then this drama is for you! From expisode 5 onward, this drama slowly deteriorates till the end; you’re left feeling like you want to tear something apart because of the stupidly and dumbness of the characters. It’s a shame since I think the main actress did a great job. It’s just too bad the scrip isn’t there. I need a massage after this drama.

I think recent Thai lakorns has a trend for slapping and punching somebody’s faces. A few slaps here and there is fine, but a slap/hit/kick every 5 minutes?? I was going to boycott all recent Thai lakorn but decided to give this new drama a chance: SOPHEAP BOROS JAM TOU. What a smartly written, funny, touching and well though out lakorn. I’ve been watching it for free on youtube, but I love it so much I went to ekomsantime and bought it. I support well written story line!

Till the next lakorn….

Dana & Pedro: Morris House Hotel Wedding | Philadelphia, PA

Last weekend was Dana and Pedro’s wedding at the beautiful Morris House Hotel. We were all expecting rain, but hoping there’s no rain. I was expecting the worst and even bought my sister to be my assistant, but ended up letting her go because the weather was so nice. I was warned that Dana is very camera shy but I think she did great. She is officially the first bride that ever kissed me. I got hugs before but no kisses :)

Huot & Ming: Wedding

My brother’s wedding….what a day that was. Good planning goes a long way. Definitely hire a wedding planner; you’ll enjoy your own wedding so much more. I am not the official photographer. I’m too nervous to be the one who is solely responsible of my brother and sister in law’s important day.

We start the day of at I Do Wedding Store over at South Philly. This is a one stop shop with full wedding related services; bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, tuxedo, photography, videography, invitations, decorations….the whole nine yard. The make up artists and hair stylist is so nice. I highly recommend them.

An Asian wedding can have so many traditions and rules. For example, the gifts bearing, the red envelopes, who gets to open the door first, the wiping of the shoes….

After the tea ceremony, we head off to the Art Museum at center city. It was an absolutely beautiful day. Cloudy with no rain. Apparently this day is very popular. There was already two wedding party there and three more when we arrived at Chinatown.

The reception is held at Joy Tsin Lau Restaurant. For as long as I can remember, my family always held wedding receptions and birthday parties there. My grandma and the owner of the restaurant go way back. I didn’t get a chance to take many pictures at the reception since I had to help seat the guests.

At the end of the night, you are either one of the two ;)
